JOB SUMMARY:
The Nurse Manager is responsible for the twenty-four (24) hour planning, organizing, directing and controlling of the daily operations and clinical practice of the nursing area(s). The Nurse Manger is responsible for the provision of safe, individualized patient care to patients ranging from pediatric to geriatric on the age continuum. The Nurse Manager assumes fiscal responsibility through the unit budgets, services as a liaison with the medical staff and other personnel, promotes the maximum growth and development of each associate and assures patient advocacy.
QUALIFICATIONS/JOB REQUIREMENTS:
EDUCATION:
- Bachelors degree in Nursing or equivalent work experience (5+ years).
- Masters degree in nursing, business or health related field preferred.
EXPERIENCE:
- Five years’ experience in Peri-op Nursing
- Two years’ experience in a Peri-op management position preferred.
CERTIFICATIONS/LICENSURE:
- Current CA RN License.
- BCLS
- Certified Nursing Administration (C.N.A.) preferred.

- Demonstrates a full command (verbal and written) of the English language.
- Computer literate.
- Excellent written and verbal communication skills.
POSITION SPECIFIC DUTIES (other duties may be assigned)
CLINICAL PRATICE
- Implements and monitors operational objectives consistent with Seton Medical Center Mission and Surgical/Cath Lab Services direction.
- Monitors patient care management for assigned patient care area.
- Conducts evaluative rounds on a continuous basis to assure safe, competent, quality patient care, maintain visibility, and maintain a working knowledge of unit/staff activity.
- Promotes inter/intra-departmental collaboration and communication in the management of clinical practice.
- Complies with Universal precautions, Hazardous Materials Management Program, Infection Control/Safety Policies.
- Evaluates and implements staff development/education to assure quality nursing care delivery that is based on new technologies, trends, interventions and research findings.
- Develop and implement policies and procedures that guide and support the provision of patient care/services.
- Delegate the work associates with a particular responsibility and competency, to qualified staff members.
- Uses available support services and nursing resources as necessary.
QUALITY MANAGEMENT
- Develops, evaluates, and monitors quality through a formalized process.
- Completes Quality Improvement activities on a quarterly basis and submits to Director, Surgical Services and the Quality Improvement Committee.
- Analyzes data to determine issues/areas for improvement and initiates change, with staff input/participation, to assure compliance.
- Completes safety, Joint Commission, etc., checklists as necessary to assure regulatory/medical center compliance.
- Assures that all physicians performing services in the designated unit are current members of the Medical Staff at Seton Medical Center.
- Monitors physician suspensions until cleared by the Medical Records Department.
FINANCIAL ACCOUNTABILITY/PRODUCTIVITY
Prepares and monitors unit budgets, (wage, non-wage, capital and revenue) to accomplish fiscal objectives.
- Develops systems to monitor budgets on an on-going basis and establishes mechanisms to evaluate, track and report variances.
- Responsible for assuring appropriate quality and quantity of nursing staff to meet patient care requirements and meet productivity/efficiency standards on a bi-weekly basis.
- Develops capital equipment budgets in collaboration with physicians and department staff.
- Evaluated proposed equipment in a systematic process to achieve optimal results, submits requests for purchase
Implements cost containment measures through:
- Instilling an attitude in staff of “work smarter not harder.”
- Review historic nursing tasks that are no longer valid and implement changes based on new trends and research findings.
- Review/evaluate staff mix and makes changes as appropriate to assure cost effective patient care delivery.
- Monitors use of overtime, supplemental staffing, and benefit utilization to determine trends and initiate changes to maintain fiscal compliance.
- In collaboration with support departments, establishes appropriate supply/equipment levels based on justified need and patient complexity and implements changes as necessary to assure non-wage budget compliance.
- Collaborates with Materials Management to manage purchasing process.
- Monitors supply and implant expenses to evaluate opportunities for savings
- Communicates budgetary information to the staff, seeking input with the goal of productivity and increase efficiency.
- Maintains an awareness of trends/developments in health care systems to assure a competitive edge. Markets new programs and technologies which appeal to physicians, managed care organizations, patients, and Seton Medical Center.
- Monitors cost and recommends changes in systems to ensure budget neutrality. Submit data to the appropriate DON, AND, and/or Vice President for approval.
HUMAN RESOURCE MANAGEMENT, LEADERSHIP, PROFESSIONALISM
- Demonstrates sound management and leadership principles with all contacts.
- Promotes participative management with staff, physicians, and other personnel to encourage active involvement in unit and patient care decision-making.

- Actively participates in committees, task forces, and hospital/nursing activities to represent unit, staff, and professional nursing.
- Maintains an open door policy with staff and physicians to assure on-going communication of issues and concerns in order to enhance patient care, nursing practice and guest relations.
- Conducts and documents routine staff meetings to assure the timely communication of information, obtain feedback, and assure progress toward goal attainment.
- Initiates and/or participates in the review and revision of policies and procedures on an on-going basis. Assures staff education of content changes in policies and procedures in a timely fashion.

- In collaboration with the Clinical Specialists, assures orientation of all new associates, yearly required training programs and bi-annual BCLS certification.
