Job Summary:
The Pharmacy Technician supports the Department of Pharmacy Services by assisting pharmacists in the preparation, compounding, distribution, and management of medications for institutional patients. This role maintains proficiency across pharmacy operations, supports sterile, non-sterile, and hazardous compounding activities under pharmacist supervision, and delivers high-quality customer service to clinical staff and patients while ensuring compliance with USP standards and departmental policies.
Key Responsibilities:
- Maintain proficiency in all areas of the Department of Pharmacy Services within the scope of pharmacy technician responsibilities
- Prepare medications in unit dose packaging and label medications using repackaging software
- Perform routine rounds to patient care floors to deliver medications and supplies
- Assess medication storage areas for outdated medications, cleanliness, and appropriate stocking
- Fill automated dispensing machines using barcode technology
- Support pharmacists in serving the needs of institutional patients
- Assist in all pharmacy department areas as workload permits
- Perform pharmaceutical dosage calculations for sterile and non-sterile preparations
- Compound non-sterile preparations under pharmacist supervision in accordance with USP <795>
- Compound sterile preparations under pharmacist supervision in accordance with USP <797>
- Compound hazardous preparations under pharmacist supervision in accordance with USP <800>
- Replenish compounding area stock including medications, syringes, needles, and IV fluids
- Identify and dispose of outdated medications and patient-specific compounded preparations
- Triage incoming phone calls to appropriate pharmacy personnel
- Provide outstanding customer service to nurses, physicians, and patients
- Assist with orientation and training of new pharmacy technician staff
- Restock emergency code cart trays and kits and maintain required documentation
- Refill and restock anesthesia medication trays and maintain corresponding records
- Maintain organization and cleanliness of work areas
- Perform other duties as assigned by pharmacy leadership
Required Skills:
- Strong attention to detail and organizational skills
- Ability to perform pharmaceutical calculations
- Knowledge of pharmacy operations and medication handling
- Minimum of 1 year of pharmacy technician experience required
- Compounding experience preferred but not required
- Strong customer service and communication skills
- Ability to work effectively in a clinical healthcare environment

Education:
High School Diploma or equivalent
Certifications:
Current registration as a Pharmacy Technician in the Commonwealth of Massachusetts (required)
National Pharmacy Technician Certification (required)
