Job Summary
The Registered Nurse – CVICU provides specialized nursing care to critically ill patients in the cardiovascular medical and surgical intensive care unit. This role requires advanced clinical skills to manage complex cardiac conditions, including patients with mechanical circulatory support devices. The RN will collaborate with physicians, surgeons, and interdisciplinary teams to deliver safe, evidence-based care in a high-acuity environment.
Key Responsibilities
- Provide comprehensive nursing care to critically ill cardiac patients in the CVICU
- Safely manage a patient assignment of up to two ICU patients
- Monitor, assess, and document patient conditions, including hemodynamic status and cardiac rhythms
- Administer medications, IV therapies, and blood products as prescribed
- Operate and manage advanced cardiac devices such as Impella and intra-aortic balloon pump (IABP)
- Support patients requiring renal replacement therapy, including NxStage systems
- Respond promptly to emergencies and perform life-saving interventions
- Collaborate with physicians, advanced practice providers, and other healthcare professionals to develop and implement individualized care plans
- Maintain compliance with hospital policies, infection control standards, and regulatory requirements
Required Qualifications
- Current RN license in the state of practice
- Bachelor of Science in Nursing (BSN) or Associate Degree in Nursing (ADN) with commitment to obtain BSN
- Minimum of 1–2 years of ICU nursing experience
- Strong clinical assessment and critical thinking skills
- Ability to work 12-hour shifts, including nights, weekends, and holidays
Preferred Qualifications (if any)
- Current experience managing Impella and IABP devices
- NxStage training and experience with continuous renal replacement therapy (CRRT)
- Prior experience in a CVICU or cardiac surgical ICU setting
Certifications (if any)
- Basic Life Support (BLS) – required
- Advanced Cardiovascular Life Support (ACLS) – required
- Critical Care Registered Nurse (CCRN) – preferred
