Job Summary
The Certified Surgical Technologist is responsible for preparing and maintaining a sterile surgical environment, assisting surgeons during procedures, and ensuring patient safety through adherence to established protocols. This role involves setting up operating rooms, handling surgical instruments, and anticipating the needs of the surgical team to support successful outcomes.
Key Responsibilities
- Prepare and maintain a sterile surgical field in accordance with hospital standards.
- Set up operating rooms with appropriate surgical instruments, equipment, and supplies.
- Scrub in and assist surgeons during procedures by passing instruments and supplies.
- Anticipate the needs of the surgeon throughout the procedure to ensure efficiency.
- Perform sponge, needle, and instrument counts with the circulating nurse to maintain patient safety.
- Ensure compliance with infection control, safety, and regulatory guidelines.
- Maintain and troubleshoot surgical equipment as needed.
- Collaborate with surgeons, nurses, and other healthcare professionals to provide coordinated care.
- Document surgical activities and equipment usage accurately.
Required Qualifications
- Completion of an accredited Surgical Technology program.
- Current certification as a Certified Surgical Technologist (CST).
- Strong knowledge of sterile technique and surgical procedures.
- Excellent communication and teamwork skills.
- Ability to work effectively in high-stress, fast-paced environments.
- Must have at least 2 years of recent experience in the specialty within the past 2 years.
Preferred Qualifications (if any)
- Prior experience in an operating room or surgical setting.
- Familiarity with electronic medical record (EMR) systems.
- Experience assisting in specialized surgical procedures.
Certifications (if any)
- Certified Surgical Technologist (CST) – required.
- Basic Life Support (BLS) – required.
- Advanced Cardiac Life Support (ACLS) – preferred depending on facility requirements.
