Job Summary
The Mammographer is responsible for performing high-quality mammographic imaging studies to assist in the detection and diagnosis of breast abnormalities. This role involves direct patient care, safe and accurate imaging practices, and the use of advanced mammography equipment in accordance with regulatory and organizational standards.
Key Responsibilities
- Patient Interaction:
- Greet patients and verify identity, review imaging requests, and confirm special instructions.
- Ease patient anxieties by explaining the procedure and answering questions clearly.
- Mammography Imaging:
- Accurately position patients and adjust compression mechanisms for optimal imaging.
- Follow imaging protocols, activate equipment for exposure, and ensure proper image acquisition.
- Minimize radiation exposure to patients and staff using safe imaging practices.
- Image Quality & Documentation:
- Assess image quality, make necessary adjustments, and retake images if required.
- Forward completed studies to the radiologist for interpretation.
- Maintain thorough documentation in the patient's imaging record/chart.
- Equipment Maintenance:
- Perform daily checks and preventive maintenance on mammography equipment.
- Troubleshoot and report malfunctions, order repairs as needed.
- Maintain inventory of supplies, ensuring exam rooms are fully stocked and clean.
- Regulatory Compliance & Safety:
- Adhere to radiation safety policies and infection control protocols.
- Ensure a clean, safe, and secure imaging environment.
- Professional Development:
- Stay current with continuing education, industry updates, and credential requirements.
- Maintain membership in professional organizations as appropriate.
Qualifications
Required:
- High school diploma or equivalent
- Current Basic Life Support (BLS) certification
- Completion of formal training in Radiologic Technology from an AMA-approved program
- Registered or registry-eligible with the American Registry of Radiologic Technologists (ARRT)
- Certified Radiologic Technologist (CRT)
- ARRT Mammography (M) certification or equivalent
Preferred:
- Previous experience in mammography
- Strong technical aptitude and ability to operate advanced imaging equipment

- Ability to work independently and follow detailed protocols
Working Conditions
- May be required to stand for extended periods and lift or move patients.
- Exposure to radiation and infectious diseases, mitigated through adherence to safety procedures.
- Must wear appropriate PPE and follow clinical dress code standards.
