Job Summary
The Psychiatric Registered Nurse (RN) is responsible for providing comprehensive mental health care to patients experiencing emotional, behavioral, and psychiatric disorders. This role involves patient assessment, development of individualized care plans, medication administration, and collaboration with interdisciplinary teams. The RN ensures a safe and therapeutic environment while advocating for the mental and emotional well-being of patients in inpatient or outpatient psychiatric settings.
Key Responsibilities
- Perform comprehensive psychiatric and physical assessments of patients.
- Develop, implement, and evaluate individualized nursing care plans in collaboration with physicians and other mental health professionals.
- Administer medications and monitor for side effects or adverse reactions.
- Provide crisis intervention and manage acute psychiatric episodes using de-escalation techniques.
- Maintain accurate and timely documentation of patient status, treatments, and interventions.
- Educate patients and their families on mental health conditions, medications, and coping strategies.
- Participate in multidisciplinary team meetings to coordinate treatment plans and discharge planning.
- Maintain a therapeutic and safe environment by following unit safety protocols and monitoring patient behavior.
- Comply with hospital policies, licensing regulations, and mental health laws.
- Support patients in daily activities while encouraging independence and dignity.
Required Qualifications
- Active and unrestricted Registered Nurse (RN) license in the state of practice.
- Associate's or Bachelor's degree in Nursing from an accredited nursing program.
- BLS (Basic Life Support) certification.
- Strong understanding of psychiatric nursing, including diagnoses, treatment plans, and behavioral interventions.
- Ability to manage challenging behaviors and provide trauma-informed care.
- Excellent interpersonal and communication skills.
- Ability to work in high-stress environments with strong emotional intelligence and patience.
Preferred Qualifications (if any)
- 2 years of experience in psychiatric, behavioral health, or mental health nursing.
- Certification in Psychiatric-Mental Health Nursing (PMHN) – preferred.
- Experience with electronic medical records (EMR) and clinical documentation systems.
- Familiarity with crisis intervention techniques (e.g., CPI or PMAB training).
Certifications (if any)
- Active RN license (required).
- BLS certification (required).
- PMHN-BC (Psychiatric-Mental Health Nursing Certification) – preferred but not required.
