JOB SUMMARY
The Phlebotomist is responsible for collecting blood and other specimens from patients using various techniques including venipuncture, arterial puncture, and capillary puncture. This role ensures accurate specimen collection, labeling, and handling in accordance with established laboratory procedures. The phlebotomist communicates effectively with patients and staff, maintains a clean and organized work environment, and supports laboratory operations to meet regulatory standards.
Key Responsibilities
- Collect blood specimens using venipuncture, arterial puncture, capillary puncture, or special techniques for vascular-access devices.
- Verify patient identification prior to specimen collection.
- Respond promptly to specimen collection requests and communicate delays.
- Perform bedside glucose testing and adhere to quality control standards.
- Prepare specimens for processing and ensure accurate labeling and documentation.
- Instruct and assist patients with specimen collection (e.g., urine, sputum, chain of custody).
- Maintain organized and clean work areas and collection supplies.
- Communicate effectively with patients, staff, and other departments.
- Prepare specimens for reference lab testing and ensure proper documentation.
- Assist with report distribution, glassware washing, and supply inventory.
- Support compliance with CAP, JCAHO, CLIA, and state health department standards.
- Maintain current knowledge of lab policies, safety, infection control, and quality assurance.
- Suggest improvements to lab services and workflows.
- Comply with patient information release policies and document accordingly.
- Assist with implementation and evaluation of new procedures, products, or equipment.
- Perform related duties and assist staff during workload fluctuations.
- Work weekends, holidays, and rotate shifts as assigned.
Required Qualifications
- High school graduate or equivalent.
- Graduate of a certified Phlebotomy program or equivalent.
- Effective communication and interpersonal skills.
- Ability to make mature judgments and maintain accuracy.
- Pleasant demeanor for patient interactions.
Preferred Qualifications
Experience in a hospital laboratory setting as a phlebotomist.
Certifications
- Certified Phlebotomist with ASCP, AMT, CLSI, or equivalent.
- Basic Life Support (BLS) certification meeting American Heart Association standards.
