Job Summary:
We are seeking a detail-oriented and skilled Pathology Assistant to join our pathology department. The Pathology Assistant will support pathologists and residents in processing, dissecting, and documenting gross anatomic findings of submitted specimens. This role involves ensuring accurate specimen handling, maintaining records, and performing essential computer data entry. The ideal candidate will have strong organizational skills and a passion for supporting accurate diagnoses through precise work.
Key Responsibilities:
- Maintain and update accession records to confirm specimen and result identity.
- Assist pathologists and residents in the processing, dissection, and description of gross anatomic findings in accordance with established protocols and procedures.
- Prepare specimens for further examination and perform appropriate staining and sectioning tasks as needed.
- Perform computer data entry and verification of patient and specimen information in laboratory information systems.
- Ensure all specimens are handled and stored properly to maintain integrity and compliance with laboratory standards.
- Assist in managing and organizing pathology specimens and reports, ensuring proper documentation for reference.
- Report to the Supervisor and support with other duties and tasks as assigned, including assisting in quality control and maintaining a safe working environment.
- Adhere to safety and infection control procedures and protocols.
- Maintain effective communication with pathologists, medical professionals, and laboratory staff.
Required Qualifications:
- Bachelor's degree in pathology, biology, or related field.
- Knowledge of anatomic pathology procedures, terminology, and techniques.
- Strong attention to detail and the ability to handle specimens with precision.
- Excellent organizational and time management skills to handle multiple tasks effectively.
- Ability to work independently and as part of a collaborative team.
- Proficient in data entry and computer systems used in pathology labs.
- Strong communication skills and the ability to interact with medical professionals and patients respectfully.
Preferred Qualifications:
- Experience working in an anatomic pathology lab or related healthcare setting.
- Familiarity with laboratory information systems (LIS) and electronic health records (EHR).
- Certification as a Pathology Assistant (PA) or equivalent credentials.
Certifications:
- Certification in Basic Life Support (BLS) may be required.
- Pathology Assistant Certification (if applicable) is preferred.
