Job Summary
The Registered Nurse – Pre-Op is responsible for providing high-quality nursing care to patients preparing for surgical procedures. This role involves conducting pre-operative assessments, educating patients and families, and ensuring all necessary preparations are completed to promote safe and effective surgical outcomes. The RN collaborates with surgeons, anesthesiologists, and other healthcare professionals to deliver patient-centered care in a fast-paced environment.
Key Responsibilities
- Perform comprehensive pre-operative assessments, including medical history, vital signs, and lab review
- Educate patients and families on surgical procedures, anesthesia, and post-operative expectations
- Prepare patients physically and emotionally for surgery, ensuring informed consent is obtained
- Administer medications and IV therapies as prescribed
- Collaborate with surgical and anesthesia teams to coordinate patient care
- Maintain accurate documentation in electronic medical records (EMR)
- Ensure compliance with hospital policies, infection control, and safety standards
- Provide compassionate support to patients and families during the pre-operative process
Required Qualifications
- Current RN license in the state of practice
- Bachelor of Science in Nursing (BSN) or Associate Degree in Nursing (ADN) with commitment to obtain BSN
- Minimum of 1–2 years of nursing experience in perioperative, surgical, or acute care settings
- Strong clinical assessment and communication skills
- Ability to work in a fast-paced environment and manage multiple priorities
Preferred Qualifications (if any)
- Prior experience in a Pre-Op or PACU (Post-Anesthesia Care Unit) setting
- Familiarity with surgical procedures and anesthesia protocols
- Experience with EMR systems
Certifications (if any)
- Basic Life Support (BLS) – required
- Advanced Cardiovascular Life Support (ACLS) – preferred
- Perioperative Nursing Certification (CNOR) – preferred
