    JOB SUMMARY
    The Certified Tumor Registrar (CTR) is responsible for abstracting cancer data accurately and efficiently for state and national cancer registries. This role plays a crucial part in cancer surveillance, research, and public health initiatives.

    Key Responsibilities
    • Abstract all required data elements for reportable cancer cases according to standards set by the Commission on Cancer (CoC) and the appropriate state registry.
    • Maintain proficiency in cancer staging systems, including the American Joint Committee on Cancer (AJCC) TNM staging.
    • Assign appropriate ICD-O-3 histology and topography codes.
    • Review pathology and radiology reports, physician's operative notes, and other diagnostic documentation to ensure complete and accurate data abstraction.
    • Ensure timely reporting of cancer cases to the state registry.
    • Follow established protocols for data quality assurance and control.
    • Maintain confidentiality of patient information in accordance with HIPAA regulations.
    • Participate in continuing education to maintain certification and stay updated on changes in cancer registry standards and guidelines.

    Required Qualifications
    • High school diploma or equivalent.
    • Successful completion of an accredited formal training program for Certified Tumor Registrars.

    Certifications
    • Certified Tumor Registrar (CTR) certification by the National Conference on Cancer Registrars (NCRA).

    Experience
    • Experience in cancer data abstraction and registry operations.

    Skills
    • Proficiency in cancer data abstraction processes.
    • Strong understanding of cancer staging (e.g., AJCC TNM).
    • Knowledge of ICD-O-3 coding for histology and topography.
    • Ability to interpret medical records, pathology reports, and other clinical documentation.
    • Attention to detail and accuracy.
    • Excellent organizational and time management skills.
    • Proficiency with computer systems and relevant software.

    EMR / Systems
    • Familiarity with cancer registry software.
