Position Summary
The Registered Nurse (RN) – Inpatient Surgery provides comprehensive nursing care to surgical patients before, during, and after surgery within an inpatient hospital setting. The RN collaborates with the multidisciplinary team to ensure optimal patient outcomes, safety, and comfort throughout the surgical recovery process. This role requires strong clinical skills, critical thinking, and compassionate patient-centered care.
Key Responsibilities
- Assess, plan, implement, and evaluate nursing care for patients undergoing various surgical procedures.
- Monitor patients’ vital signs, pain levels, and surgical sites for complications and progress.
- Administer prescribed medications, IV fluids, blood products, and other therapies safely.
- Manage post-operative care including wound care, drain management, mobility assistance, and education on recovery protocols.
- Collaborate closely with surgeons, anesthesiologists, physical therapists, and other healthcare professionals.
- Provide pre-operative education and post-operative discharge instructions to patients and families.
- Maintain accurate and timely documentation of patient care in electronic health records (EHR).
- Respond promptly to patient emergencies and changes in clinical status.
- Ensure compliance with infection control standards, hospital policies, and safety protocols.
- Support pain management, mobility promotion, and prevention of surgical complications.
Required Qualifications
- Current and valid RN license in state.
- Basic Life Support (BLS) certification
- Minimum of 1-2 years nursing experience in surgical, acute care, or critical care settings preferred
- Strong assessment, critical thinking, and clinical judgment skills
- Excellent communication and interpersonal skills
- Ability to work in a fast-paced, team-oriented environment
Preferred Qualifications
- Advanced Cardiac Life Support (ACLS) certification
- Experience with electronic medical records (EMR/EHR) systems
- Knowledge of surgical procedures, post-op care protocols, and pain management strategies
- Prior experience in an inpatient surgical or perioperative nursing role
