Job Summary:
The Pathologist Assistant works under the direct or indirect supervision of a Pathologist, assisting in the preparation and performance of human surgical-specimen dissections for microscopic examination, special procedures, and biospecimen banking. This role also involves performing human postmortem examinations and assisting in the implementation and monitoring of the Quality Assurance and Quality Improvement Program in Anatomic Pathology.
Key Responsibilities:
- Assist the Pathologist in the preparation and performance of human surgical specimen dissections and postmortem examinations.
- Obtain pertinent clinical information, laboratory data, x-rays, and scans, and assess legal authorizations for autopsies.
- Describe gross anatomic features and perform dissections of surgical specimens and postmortem prosections, including external examinations and organ inspections.
- Prepare and submit appropriate tissue sections for routine histologic processing and intraoperative procedures, such as frozen section dtouch preparations.
- Triaging of biological samples, including tissue and blood, for special procedures (e.g., electron microscopy, flow cytometry, immunohistochemistry).
- Obtain and process tissues for biospecimen banking as required.
- Photograph all pertinent specimens as directed by the Pathologist.
- Ensure proper maintenance of equipment, adequate supply provision, and cleanliness of the surgical pathology suite.
- Assist the Pathologist Assistant Team Lead in overseeing Surgical Pathology Techs and the Pathology Resident Training program.
- Aid in the orientation of new employees and identify training needs to ensure effective performance bof job responsibilities.
- Assist in organizing and coordinating Anatomic Pathology Conferences.
- Accountable for complying with all organization policies and procedures and fulfilling job-specific obligations.
Experience:
Relevant experience in pathology or a related field preferred.
Certifications & Licenses:
- Certification as a Pathologist Assistant is preferred.
Skills:
- Strong communication skills.
- Proficiency in computer literacy and laboratory information systems (LIS).
- Familiarity with laboratory equipment operation and inventory management.
