Job Summary
The Registered Nurse (RN) – Oncology provides specialized nursing care to patients undergoing cancer treatment. This role is responsible for assessing, planning, implementing, and evaluating individualized patient care in collaboration with physicians, advanced practice providers, and interdisciplinary teams. The RN supports patients and families through complex treatment regimens, ensuring compassionate, safe, and evidence-based care in both inpatient and outpatient oncology settings.
Key Responsibilities
- Deliver direct patient care including chemotherapy administration, symptom management, and supportive therapies.
- Monitor patient status, respond to changes in condition, and escalate concerns appropriately.
- Educate patients and families on treatment plans, side effects, and self-care strategies.
- Collaborate with oncologists, pharmacists, and interdisciplinary teams to coordinate care.
- Document patient assessments, interventions, and outcomes accurately in the electronic medical record.
- Provide emotional support and counseling to patients and families coping with cancer diagnoses.
- Participate in quality improvement initiatives and adhere to oncology nursing best practices.
- Maintain compliance with hospital policies, safety standards, and regulatory requirements.
Required Qualifications
- Current Registered Nurse (RN) license in the state of practice.
- Bachelor of Science in Nursing (BSN) preferred; Associate Degree in Nursing (ADN) accepted.
- Minimum of 2 years of nursing experience; oncology or critical care experience strongly preferred.
- Basic Life Support (BLS) and Advanced Cardiac Life Support (ACLS) certifications.
- Strong clinical assessment, critical thinking, and communication skills.
- Ability to work effectively in high-stress, emotionally challenging environments.
Preferred Qualifications
- Oncology Certified Nurse (OCN) credential.
- Experience with chemotherapy administration and oncology-specific protocols.
- Familiarity with electronic medical record systems.
Certifications
- Required: RN license, BLS, ACLS.
- Preferred: OCN or other oncology nursing certifications.
