  • Job Summary
    The Registered Nurse (RN) – Labor and Delivery is responsible for providing comprehensive nursing care to laboring patients, mothers, newborns, and families throughout the childbirth experience. This role utilizes the nursing process to assess, plan, implement, and evaluate patient care during labor, delivery, recovery, and the immediate postpartum period.

    The ideal candidate possesses strong clinical assessment skills, critical thinking abilities, and expertise in maternal and newborn care. This position works closely with obstetricians, midwives, anesthesiologists, neonatologists, and interdisciplinary healthcare teams to ensure safe, high-quality care and positive birth outcomes.

    Key Responsibilities
    • Maternal Assessment & Labor Management
    • Assess, monitor, and evaluate maternal and fetal status throughout labor and delivery.
    • Perform comprehensive nursing assessments and develop individualized care plans.
    • Monitor fetal heart rate patterns, uterine contractions, and maternal vital signs.
    • Recognize and respond appropriately to changes in maternal or fetal conditions.
    • Provide nursing care during all stages of labor, delivery, and recovery.
    • Patient Care & Clinical Interventions
    • Administer medications, IV fluids, blood products, and treatments as prescribed.
    • Assist with labor induction, augmentation, and pain management interventions.
    • Support epidural placement and monitor patient responses to anesthesia.
    • Perform nursing procedures and interventions within the scope of practice.
    • Assist physicians and midwives during vaginal deliveries, cesarean sections, and emergency obstetrical procedures.
    • Newborn & Postpartum Care
    • Provide immediate newborn assessment and care following delivery.
    • Monitor maternal recovery during the postpartum period.
    • Support breastfeeding initiation and newborn bonding.
    • Assess mother and infant for potential complications and escalate concerns as appropriate.
    • Provide education regarding newborn care, postpartum recovery, and discharge planning.

    Patient & Family Education
    • Educate patients and families regarding labor, delivery, postpartum care, breastfeeding, and newborn care.
    • Provide emotional support and reassurance throughout the childbirth process.
    • Promote informed decision-making and patient-centered care.
    • Support family involvement while ensuring patient safety and comfort.
    • Care Coordination & Collaboration
    • Collaborate with obstetricians, certified nurse midwives, anesthesiologists, neonatologists, lactation consultants, and other healthcare professionals.
    • Participate in multidisciplinary care planning and patient handoffs.
    • Coordinate admissions, transfers, and discharge processes.
    • Ensure timely communication regarding patient conditions and treatment plans.
    • Documentation & Compliance
    • Accurately document assessments, interventions, medications, fetal monitoring data, and patient outcomes in the Electronic Medical Record (EMR).
    • Maintain compliance with hospital policies, regulatory requirements, and nursing standards.
    • Adhere to infection prevention, patient safety, and quality improvement initiatives.
    • Ensure confidentiality of patient information in accordance with HIPAA regulations.

    Required Qualifications
    • Graduate of an accredited Nursing program.
    • Current and unrestricted Registered Nurse (RN) license in the applicable state.
    • Previous acute care nursing experience.
    • Strong clinical assessment, critical thinking, and decision-making skills.
    • Ability to work effectively in a fast-paced, high-acuity environment.
    • Excellent communication and interpersonal skills.
    • Proficiency with Electronic Medical Record (EMR) systems.
    • Ability to work flexible schedules, including nights, weekends, holidays, and on-call assignments as required.

    Preferred Qualifications
    • Bachelor of Science in Nursing (BSN).
    • Previous Labor and Delivery, Mother-Baby, Women's Health, Postpartum, NICU, or Obstetrics experience.
    • Experience with fetal monitoring and high-risk obstetrical patients.
    • Knowledge of maternal-child nursing practices and obstetrical emergency procedures.
    • Experience in a hospital-based Labor and Delivery unit.

    Certifications (If Any)
    • Current Registered Nurse (RN) License – Required
    • Basic Life Support (BLS) Certification – Required
    • Advanced Cardiac Life Support (ACLS) Certification – Required or Preferred per facility policy
    • Neonatal Resuscitation Program (NRP) Certification – Required
    • Fetal Monitoring Certification – Preferred
    • Inpatient Obstetric Nursing Certification (RNC-OB) – Preferred
    • Additional maternal-child health certifications are a plus.
