Job Summary
The Coding Quality Review Educator performs internal quality assessment reviews to ensure compliance with national coding guidelines and organizational policies. This role supports accurate, consistent coding practices that drive appropriate reimbursement and data integrity. The educator coordinates and delivers coding education, mentors staff, and assists leadership with root cause analysis, process improvements, and training initiatives to enhance coding quality and physician documentation.
Key Responsibilities
- Conduct routine, pre-bill, policy-driven, and incentive plan-driven quality reviews for inpatient and outpatient coding.
- Respond to coding-related questions from staff and provide education as needed.
- Facilitate coding integrity and quality review (CQR) education sessions.
- Initiate rebilling processes per policy for special projects.
- Research coding opportunities and escalate issues when necessary.
- Assist in process improvement, troubleshooting, and prioritization of coding quality issues.
- Monitor QA results to identify root causes and educational opportunities.
- Develop and deliver curriculum and training materials.
- Ensure adherence to coding guidelines, policies, and standards.
- Coach and mentor coding staff to improve accuracy and consistency.
- Maintain productivity and accuracy standards (=95%).
- Stay current with official coding guidelines, data quality standards, and clinical resources.
- Conduct annual education needs assessments to inform strategic training programs.
- Communicate coding trends and outcomes to leadership for global education initiatives.
- Apply adult learning principles in developing and delivering educational programs.
- Provide skilled coding support during meetings and special projects.
- Demonstrate adherence to organizational Code of Conduct, ethics, and values.
Required Qualifications
- High school diploma or GED required; Associate or Bachelor’s degree in Health Information Management/Technology (HIM/HIT) preferred.
- Minimum of 5 years of acute care inpatient/outpatient coding experience.
- Minimum of 3 years of coding auditing/monitoring experience strongly preferred.
- Extensive knowledge of ICD-10-CM, ICD-10-PCS, CPT-4, modifiers, MS-DRGs, POA assignment, APR-DRGs, and APCs.
- Strong analytical, decision-making, and problem-solving skills.
- Excellent communication and interpersonal abilities.
- Proficiency in Microsoft Office applications and data analysis tools.
Preferred Qualifications (if any)
- Proven experience in coding education and curriculum development.
- Familiarity with healthcare information systems and query handbooks.
- Ability to work independently and collaboratively in team environments.
Certifications (if any)
- RHIA, RHIT, CCS, or CPC – required.
