Job Summary
The Registered Nurse in the Post Partum unit provides comprehensive nursing care to patients following childbirth. This role focuses on maintaining high standards of care, ensuring patient safety, and delivering effective patient education. The RN collaborates closely with the maternal-newborn team to provide optimal care to mothers and newborns during the postpartum recovery period.
Key Responsibilities
- Patient Care: Deliver nursing care for postpartum mothers and newborns, ensuring quality and safety.Monitoring: Conduct and interpret electronic fetal monitoring, adult cardiac monitoring, and newborn monitoring (pulse oximetry and cardiac monitoring).
- Clinical Skills: Perform IV insertions, lab draws, heel sticks, venipuncture, and other clinical procedures.
- Medication Administration: Administer high-risk medications (Magnesium, Oxytocin, Insulin) and manage newborn medications, including IV administration.
- Testing & Procedures: Perform urine point-of-care testing, capillary blood glucose testing, and IStat testing.
- Newborn Care: Utilize newborn equipment such as radiant warmers and bili-blankets/lights; perform newborn procedures including heel sticks and venipuncture.
- Patient Education: Educate mothers on maternal-newborn care, post-operative bladder training, and gynecological teaching as appropriate.
- Collaborative Care: Work closely with the healthcare team to ensure coordinated care and smooth patient transitions.
- Documentation: Accurately document patient care, interventions, and progress in accordance with hospital policies.
Required Qualifications
- Must have at least 2 years of recent experience in the specialty within the past 2 years.
- Graduate of an accredited nursing program.
- Active Registered Nurse License in the state of practice.
- Basic Life Support (BLS) Certification.
- Advanced Neonatal Resuscitation Program (NRP) Certification.
- Demonstrated ability to perform electronic fetal monitoring and IV insertion.
- Knowledge of high-risk medication administration (Magnesium, Oxytocin, Insulin).
- Ability to perform urine point-of-care testing and capillary blood glucose testing.
- Proficiency with IStat and adult cardiac monitoring.
- Knowledge of newborn monitors, including pulse oximetry and cardiac monitoring.
- Ability to perform heel sticks and venipuncture on newborns.
- Knowledge of newborn medication administration, including IV administration and maintenance.
- Understanding of bili-blankets, radiant warmers, and maternal-newborn education practices.
Preferred Qualifications (if any)
- Additional certifications in maternal-newborn nursing or related specialties.
- Experience in patient education and family-centered care.
