Job Summary
The Speech/Language Pathologist is responsible for evaluating, diagnosing, and treating patients with communication disorders, including speech, language, and oral motor dysfunction. This role develops individualized therapy plans, provides education to families and caregivers, and collaborates with healthcare and educational professionals to promote patient communication skills.
Key Responsibilities
Patient Care
- Independently evaluate patients with suspected or known communication disorders using standardized and non-standardized tools.
- Record evaluation findings in accordance with Departmental and Hospital procedures.
- Refer patients to medical and educational services when appropriate.
- Develop individualized therapy plans with treatment goals; update goals and track patient progress.
- Present evaluation findings, progress, and recommendations to patients, families, caregivers, and healthcare professionals.
- Instruct family members and caregivers in home therapy programs.
- Consult with healthcare and educational staff to support patient communication skills.
Administration
- Participate in departmental functions such as staff meetings, continuing education activities, committees, and quality improvement projects.
- Assist in the development and refinement of clinical protocols.
- Support equipment and supply maintenance and ordering.
Education
- Teach within the Department, Hospital, professional community, and non-professional community.
- Provide consultative services outside of the hospital setting.
- Mentor professional observers, students, and clinical fellows.
Required Qualifications
- Master’s Degree in Speech-Language Pathology.
- Must have at least 2 years of recent experience in the specialty within the past 2 years.
- Experience in a pediatric medical-based setting.
- Strong analytical skills to independently identify and resolve clinical and research problems.
- High-level skills in pediatric speech and language assessment procedures.
- Fundamental research skills, including knowledge of methodology, design, and statistics.
Preferred Qualifications (if any)
- Experience teaching or mentoring students and clinical fellows.
- Participation in departmental quality improvement initiatives.
Certifications (if any)
- License in Speech-Language Pathology (must be obtained within 3 months of hire).
- License from the Commonwealth of Pennsylvania and/or the State of New Jersey (or eligibility to obtain within 3 months of employment).
- CCC-SLP (Certificate of Clinical Competence in Speech-Language Pathology) required upon hire.
