Job Summary
The Perfusionist – Travel maintains and operates cardiopulmonary bypass equipment and related devices during invasive cardiovascular procedures. This role supports physicians and surgical teams by managing life-support systems, ensuring patient safety, and assisting with specialized cardiovascular interventions. The Perfusionist also contributes to quality assurance, infection control, and equipment maintenance.
Key Responsibilities
- Operate cardiopulmonary bypass machines (“pump”) during open-heart surgery.
- Set up and operate left and/or right heart bypass pumps.
- Operate extracorporeal membrane oxygenation (ECMO) and artificial heart console systems.
- Set up and operate intra-aortic balloon pumping (IABP) systems.
- Demonstrate full knowledge of heparin, protamine, and anticoagulation titration analysis systems.
- Serve in an advisory capacity to surgeons regarding administration of cardiac drugs.
- Set up and operate autotransfusion (Cell Saver) equipment for cardiovascular, orthopedic, vascular, and other surgical procedures.
- Perform plating, ID of microorganisms, susceptibility testing, Gram stains (if applicable to lab support).
- Demonstrate proficiency in patient management responsibilities including anatomy, physiology, pathology, pharmacology, cardiology, surgical techniques, physiologic monitoring, and patient care.
- Assist in setting up and inserting IABP in OR, Cath Lab, ICU, or other required settings.
- Ensure ordering of supplies and maintain equipment per manufacturer’s recommendations.
- Provide required data for Quality and Infection Control reporting.
Required Qualifications
- Completion of an accredited perfusionist program.
- Must have at least 2 years of recent experience in the specialty within the past 2 years.
- Strong knowledge of cardiovascular procedures and perfusion techniques.
- Ability to work independently and collaboratively in high-acuity surgical environments.
Preferred Qualifications (if any)
- Prior travel perfusionist experience.
- Board eligibility or certification by the American Board of Cardiovascular Perfusion.
- Strong organizational and problem-solving skills.
Certifications (if any)
- Basic Life Support (BLS) – required (AHA only).
- State Perfusionist Licensure – required.
- Board eligible or certified by the American Board of Cardiovascular Perfusion – preferred.
