Job Summary
The Respiratory Therapist is responsible for assessing, treating, and caring for patients with breathing or cardiopulmonary disorders. This role involves performing diagnostic tests, administering respiratory therapy treatments, and collaborating with physicians and other healthcare professionals to ensure optimal patient outcomes. The therapist provides both acute and chronic care, educates patients and families, and ensures compliance with safety and regulatory standards.
Key Responsibilities
- Assess patients’ respiratory conditions and develop individualized treatment plans.
- Administer oxygen therapy, aerosol medications, chest physiotherapy, and mechanical ventilation.
- Perform diagnostic procedures such as arterial blood gas analysis, pulmonary function testing, and oximetry.
- Monitor patient responses to therapy and adjust treatments as necessary.
- Operate, maintain, and troubleshoot respiratory therapy equipment.
- Collaborate with physicians, nurses, and other healthcare professionals to coordinate patient care.
- Educate patients and families on respiratory health, treatment plans, and equipment use.
- Document patient assessments, treatments, and progress in compliance with organizational standards.
- Adhere to infection control, safety, and regulatory guidelines.
- Provide emergency respiratory care, including airway management and resuscitation support.
Required Qualifications
- Associate’s or Bachelor’s degree in Respiratory Therapy from an accredited program.
- Current Respiratory Therapist license in [state/region].
- Must have at least 2 years of recent experience in the specialty within the past 2 years.
- Strong knowledge of respiratory therapy techniques, equipment, and procedures.
- Excellent communication and interpersonal skills.
- Ability to work independently and collaboratively within a multidisciplinary team.
Preferred Qualifications (if any)
- Experience in critical care or neonatal/pediatric respiratory therapy.
- Familiarity with electronic medical record (EMR) systems.
- Advanced training in pulmonary rehabilitation or sleep medicine.
Certifications (if any)
- Registered Respiratory Therapist (RRT) or Certified Respiratory Therapist (CRT) – required.
- Basic Life Support (BLS) – required.
- Advanced Cardiac Life Support (ACLS) – preferred.
- Pediatric Advanced Life Support (PALS) – preferred.
