Job Summary
The Sterile Processing Technician is responsible for the decontamination, inspection, assembly, sterilization, and distribution of surgical instruments and medical equipment. This role ensures that all instruments and supplies are processed in accordance with hospital policies, infection control standards, and regulatory requirements to support safe and efficient patient care in surgical and procedural areas.
Key Responsibilities
- Decontaminate, clean, inspect, and sterilize surgical instruments, trays, and medical equipment according to established protocols.
- Assemble and wrap instrument sets and ensure proper labeling and documentation before sterilization.
- Operate sterilizers, washers, ultrasonic cleaners, and other departmental equipment safely and effectively.
- Monitor sterilization parameters and maintain accurate records of sterilization cycles and biological test results.
- Distribute sterile and non-sterile supplies to operating rooms and other hospital units as needed.
- Identify and report damaged or malfunctioning instruments or equipment.
- Maintain inventory levels of sterile processing supplies and restock as necessary.
- Adhere to infection control, safety, and quality assurance standards.
- Collaborate with surgical and nursing staff to ensure instrument readiness and case cart accuracy.
- Participate in ongoing training and continuing education related to sterile processing practices.
Required Qualifications
- High school diploma or equivalent required.
- Completion of an accredited Sterile Processing Technician or Central Service Technician training program preferred.
- Basic understanding of medical terminology, surgical instruments, and sterilization principles.
- Strong attention to detail and ability to follow precise procedures and protocols.
- Good communication and teamwork skills in a fast-paced, hospital environment.
Preferred Qualifications
- Must have at least 2 years of recent experience in the specialty within the past 2 years.
- Experience in an acute care hospital or surgical center setting.
- Familiarity with tracking systems such as CensiTrac, SurgiCount, or similar software.
Certifications
- Certified Registered Central Service Technician (CRCST) through HSPA (formerly IAHCSMM) or
- Certified Sterile Processing and Distribution Technician (CSPDT) through CBSPD required or must be obtained within 12–18 months of hire.
- Basic Life Support (BLS) certification preferred.
