Job Summary
We are seeking a compassionate and skilled Registered Nurse (RN) – PACU to provide high-quality nursing care to patients recovering from anesthesia following surgical or procedural interventions. The PACU RN is responsible for monitoring patients during the immediate post-operative phase, assessing recovery progress, managing pain, identifying and responding to complications, and collaborating with the interdisciplinary healthcare team to ensure safe and effective patient care.
Key Responsibilities
- Provide comprehensive nursing care to patients in the Post-Anesthesia Care Unit (PACU).
- Monitor patients recovering from general, regional, or local anesthesia.
- Perform ongoing patient assessments, including vital signs, neurological status, airway management, and pain evaluation.
- Recognize and respond promptly to post-operative complications or changes in patient condition.
- Administer medications, intravenous fluids, blood products, and treatments as prescribed.
- Manage post-operative pain and implement appropriate comfort measures.
- Maintain accurate and timely documentation in the electronic medical record (EMR).
- Collaborate with surgeons, anesthesiologists, physicians, and other healthcare professionals to coordinate patient care.
- Educate patients and their families regarding post-operative recovery, discharge instructions, medications, and follow-up care.
- Ensure compliance with infection prevention, patient safety, and quality care standards.
- Prepare patients for discharge or transfer to the appropriate level of care.
- Participate in quality improvement initiatives and maintain compliance with organizational policies and regulatory requirements.
- Perform other duties as assigned.
Required Qualifications
- Graduate of an accredited School of Nursing.
- Current and unrestricted Registered Nurse (RN) license in the applicable state.
- Minimum of 1–2 years of recent Registered Nurse experience, with PACU, Critical Care, ICU, Emergency Department, or Surgical Services experience preferred based on facility requirements.
- Strong knowledge of post-anesthesia recovery, patient assessment, and perioperative nursing care.
- Proficiency in administering medications, IV therapy, and post-operative monitoring.
- Excellent clinical judgment, critical thinking, and problem-solving skills.
- Strong communication and interpersonal skills.
- Ability to work effectively in a fast-paced, team-oriented healthcare environment.
- Proficiency with Electronic Medical Records (EMR) systems.
Preferred Qualifications
- Previous PACU nursing experience.
- Experience caring for adult and/or pediatric post-operative patients.
- Familiarity with moderate sedation recovery protocols.
- Experience with patient-controlled analgesia (PCA), ventilator management, or telemetry monitoring.
- Bachelor's degree in Nursing (BSN).
Certifications
- Current Registered Nurse (RN) License – Required.
- Basic Life Support (BLS) Certification – Required.
- Advanced Cardiovascular Life Support (ACLS) Certification – Required.
- Pediatric Advanced Life Support (PALS) Certification – Preferred or required based on facility needs.
- Certified Post Anesthesia Nurse (CPAN) – Preferred.
