Job Summary
The Operating Room (OR) Technician, also known as a Surgical Technologist, plays a critical role in supporting surgical teams before, during, and after procedures. This position is responsible for preparing the operating room, ensuring the availability and sterility of surgical instruments, and assisting the surgical team to facilitate efficient, safe, and successful surgeries. The OR Technician works closely with surgeons, anesthesiologists, nurses, and other healthcare staff in a fast-paced clinical environment.
Key Responsibilities
- Prepare operating rooms by setting up surgical instruments, sterile drapes, and necessary equipment.
- Ensure all instruments and supplies are sterilized and in proper working order.
- Assist the surgical team during procedures by passing instruments, maintaining a sterile field, and anticipating the needs of the surgeon.
- Handle specimens properly and ensure accurate labeling and transfer.
- Count sponges, instruments, and supplies before and after surgery to maintain accurate records and prevent retained surgical items.
- Clean and restock the operating room following procedures.
- Adhere to infection control practices, sterile technique standards, and hospital protocols at all times.
- Communicate effectively with surgical and nursing staff to ensure smooth workflow and patient safety.
Required Qualifications
- Completion of an accredited surgical technology program or equivalent on-the-job training.
- Minimum of 1 year of experience as an Operating Room Technician or Surgical Technologist.
- Knowledge of surgical procedures, sterile techniques, and medical terminology.
- Ability to function effectively in high-pressure situations and respond quickly to emergencies.
Preferred Qualifications
- Experience in a hospital operating room or outpatient surgical center.
- Familiarity with a variety of surgical specialties (e.g., general surgery, orthopedics, neurosurgery).
Certifications
- Basic Life Support (BLS) – Required
- Certified Surgical Technologist (CST) through NBSTSA – Preferred
