Job Summary
The Perioperative Circulator is a Registered Nurse (RN) responsible for planning, coordinating, delivering, and evaluating nursing care for patients undergoing operative or invasive procedures. The role involves providing nursing care to patients whose protective reflexes or self-care abilities may be compromised during surgery, utilizing clinical knowledge, judgment, and scientific principles. This position focuses on addressing the physical, psychological, and spiritual responses of patients undergoing surgical or invasive procedures, ensuring their safety, comfort, and well-being throughout the perioperative process.
Key Responsibilities
Essential Responsibilities
Patient Care & Evaluation:
- Provide both direct and indirect nursing care to patients in the operating room environment.
- Perform ongoing evaluation and documentation of all aspects of patient care during the perioperative period using the nursing process.
- Individualize care based on the patient's health status, age, and the specific procedure or surgery being performed.
- Address physical, psychological, and spiritual needs of patients before, during, and after surgical or invasive procedures.
- Ensure patient safety, comfort, and protection of their dignity throughout the perioperative experience.
Coordination & Collaboration:
- Collaborate with the surgical team, including surgeons, anesthesiologists, and other medical professionals to ensure optimal care and patient outcomes.
- Coordinate patient care needs before, during, and after procedures, ensuring effective communication and documentation.
- Maintain sterile technique and manage the operating room environment to minimize infection risk.
Documentation & Reporting:
- Maintain accurate and detailed documentation of all aspects of patient care and surgical activities.
- Regularly assess and document patient responses to the procedure, including vital signs, medications, and other interventions.
Other Duties as Assigned:
- Perform other duties and responsibilities as assigned by the department and leadership.
Required Skills & Experience
Experience:
- Minimum of one (1) year of experience in an acute operating room environment.
- Knowledge of professional nursing theory, practices, techniques, and procedures.
- Strong understanding of AORN (Association of periOperative Registered Nurses) Standards.
- Experience in organizing, planning, coordinating, and evaluating nursing services within the perioperative environment.
- Ability to maintain effective working relationships with a multidisciplinary healthcare team.
- Strong verbal and written communication skills.
- Ability to work effectively as part of a team providing specialized patient care.
- Basic computer skills for documentation and communication.
Preferred Skills & Experience
Certifications:
- CNOR (Certified Perioperative Nurse) certification is preferred.
Required Education
Minimum:
- Associate's Degree in Nursing from an accredited nursing program.
Preferred:
- Bachelor of Science in Nursing (BSN) from a Board-approved program.
Required Certifications & Licensure
Licensure:
- Current Registered Nurse (RN) License issued by the Oklahoma State Board of Nursing, or a current multistate compact RN License (eNLC).
Certifications:
- Current Basic Life Support (BLS) certification issued by the American Heart Association.
- Preferred Certifications & Licensure
- CNOR (Certified Perioperative Nurse) certification is preferred.
