JOB SUMMARY
The Registered Nurse – PACU is responsible for providing high-quality, compassionate care to patients recovering from anesthesia following surgical procedures. This role involves close monitoring of vital signs, managing pain and post-operative symptoms, and ensuring patient safety and comfort during the critical recovery phase. The PACU nurse collaborates with anesthesiologists, surgeons, and other healthcare professionals to deliver comprehensive post-operative care and facilitate smooth transitions to other care units or discharge.
Key Responsibilities
- Monitor patients’ levels of consciousness and vital signs during recovery from anesthesia
- Administer medications for pain, nausea, and other post-operative symptoms
- Assess patients for signs of complications and intervene as necessary
- Document patient status, treatments, and clinical findings accurately
- Collaborate with anesthesiologists, surgeons, and other healthcare professionals
- Educate patients and families on post-surgery care and recovery instructions
- Prepare patients for discharge once recovery criteria are met
- Implement infection control and safety measures
- Respond to emergency situations and provide critical interventions
Required Qualifications
- Associate or Bachelor of Science in Nursing (BSN)
- Active Registered Nurse (RN) license
- Minimum 1-2 years of experience in a PACU or critical care setting
- Proficiency in monitoring equipment and electronic health records
- Strong clinical assessment and critical thinking skills
- Excellent communication and interpersonal abilities
Preferred Qualifications
- Experience in surgical recovery or critical care environments
- Familiarity with hospital systems like Epic or Mediexcel
Certifications
- Basic Life Support (BLS)
- Advanced Cardiovascular Life Support (ACLS)
- Certified Post-Anesthesia Nurse (CPAN) preferred
