  • Job Summary  
    The American Sign Language (ASL) Interpreter provides communication support for patients, families, and staff who are deaf or hard of hearing. This role ensures accurate and culturally appropriate interpretation in clinical and administrative settings, facilitating effective communication and patient-centered care.

    Key Responsibilities
    1. Interpret spoken language into ASL and ASL into spoken language in real-time during medical appointments, procedures, and hospital interactions.
    2. Provide interpretation for patients, families, and staff in clinical, educational, and administrative settings.
    3. Maintain confidentiality and adhere to professional standards of practice.
    4. Ensure accuracy, impartiality, and cultural sensitivity in all interpretations.
    5. Collaborate with healthcare providers to facilitate clear communication and understanding of medical information.
    6. Support patient education, discharge instructions, and informed consent discussions.
    7. Document services provided in compliance with hospital policies.
    8. Assist with scheduling and coordination of interpreter services as needed.

    Required Qualifications
    1. High school diploma or equivalent; Associate or Bachelor’s degree preferred.
    2. Fluency in American Sign Language (ASL) and English.
    3. Must have at least 2 years of recent experience in the specialty within the past 2 years.
    4. Strong interpersonal and communication skills.
    5. Ability to work effectively in healthcare environments.

    Preferred Qualifications (if any)
    1. Prior experience in medical or healthcare interpreting.
    2. Knowledge of medical terminology and healthcare procedures.
    3. Ability to adapt to diverse patient populations and clinical settings.

    Certifications (if any)
    • Registry of Interpreters for the Deaf (RID) certification – required or preferred depending on facility.
    • National Interpreter Certification (NIC) – preferred.
    • Basic Life Support (BLS) – preferred in healthcare settings.
