Job Summary:
The Laboratory Phlebotomist is responsible for collecting blood and other specimens from patients in a safe, accurate, and timely manner for diagnostic testing. This role requires excellent patient care skills and a strong understanding of specimen handling, labeling, and processing protocols. The phlebotomist works closely with patients, nurses, and laboratory personnel in a variety of healthcare settings.
Key Responsibilities:
- Perform venipunctures, finger sticks, and heel sticks to collect specimens for laboratory analysis.
- Verify patient identity and ensure proper labeling of all specimens.
- Prepare specimens for transport or processing, following all safety and quality protocols.
- Maintain accurate documentation of patient interactions and specimen collections.
- Provide excellent patient service, ensuring comfort and reassurance during procedures.
- Follow infection control and safety guidelines at all times.
- Assist with specimen accessioning, test ordering, and data entry as needed.
- Maintain inventory and cleanliness of phlebotomy supplies and work area.
Required Qualifications:
- High school diploma or equivalent.
- Completion of a certified phlebotomy training program.
- Strong knowledge of blood collection techniques and medical terminology.
- Good interpersonal and communication skills.
- Ability to work in fast-paced environments and handle multiple priorities.
Preferred Qualifications:
- Previous experience in a hospital, clinic, or laboratory setting.
- Experience with electronic health record (EHR) or laboratory information systems (LIS).
- Bilingual skills are a plus in diverse patient populations.
Certifications:
- Certified Phlebotomy Technician I (CPT I) – state
- Certified Phlebotomy Technician I (CPT I) – if outside state
- Basic Life Support (BLS) certification from an accredited provider (e.g., AHA or Red Cross)
