Job Summary
The Histology Technician is responsible for preparing tissue specimens for microscopic examination and diagnosis. This role supports pathologists and laboratory staff by performing technical procedures such as tissue processing, embedding, sectioning, and staining, while ensuring accuracy, efficiency, and compliance with laboratory standards.
Key Responsibilities
- Prepare tissue samples for microscopic analysis, including fixation, processing, embedding, sectioning, and staining.
- Operate and maintain histology laboratory equipment such as microtomes, cryostats, and tissue processors.
- Perform routine and special staining techniques to highlight tissue structures.
- Label, organize, and maintain specimen integrity throughout the preparation process.
- Ensure compliance with laboratory safety protocols and quality assurance standards.
- Maintain accurate records of specimens, procedures, and results.
- Assist pathologists and laboratory staff with specimen preparation and troubleshooting.
- Participate in routine cleaning, maintenance, and calibration of laboratory equipment.
Required Qualifications
- High School Diploma or GED.
- Completion of an accredited Histology Technician program or equivalent training.
- Strong attention to detail and ability to follow precise laboratory protocols.
- Good communication and organizational skills.
- Ability to work effectively in a fast-paced laboratory environment.
- Must have at least 2 years of recent experience in the specialty within the past 2 years.
Preferred Qualifications (if any)
- Associate’s degree in a laboratory science or related field.
- Prior experience in a clinical or hospital laboratory setting.
- Familiarity with laboratory information systems (LIS).
Certifications (if any)
- Certification as a Histology Technician (HT) or Histotechnologist (HTL) through the American Society for Clinical Pathology (ASCP) or equivalent (preferred/required depending on employer).
