  • Job Summary  
    The Surgical Technician provides technical assistance in the operating room, labor and delivery, or other surgical facilities. Under immediate to general supervision, the Surgical Technician supports physicians and nurses during procedures by preparing sterile fields, handling instruments, and ensuring patient safety.

    Key Responsibilities
    1. Use physician preference cards to assist in preparing the operating room for surgical procedures.
    2. Prepare sterile fields by opening instruments and supplies using sterile technique.
    3. Perform surgical scrub prior to patient entry for all procedures.
    4. Assist physicians in draping patients and preparing the operative field.
    5. Preserve and correctly identify operative specimens for laboratory analysis.
    6. Obtain and ensure proper functioning of special equipment (e.g., electrosurgical machines, diagnostic lights).
    7. Manipulate instruments to aid surgeon efficiency and patient safety.
    8. Monitor surgical progress and provide additional instruments or supplies as needed.
    9. Recognize and correct breaks in sterile technique.
    10. Participate in sponge, needle, and instrument counts as directed by the circulating nurse.
    11. Clean and sterilize contaminated instruments, equipment, and supplies; maintain operating room cleanliness.
    12. Assist in training new surgical technicians.
    13. Perform clerical and direct patient care activities if assigned to Labor and Delivery.
    14. Perform other duties as assigned.

    Required Qualifications
    1. Graduation from an accredited school/program for Surgical Technicians.
    2. Knowledge of basic human anatomy and first-aid methods.
    3. Ability to maintain effective working relationships with staff and physicians.
    4. Demonstrated knowledge and skills necessary to provide age-appropriate care across patient populations (neonate, pediatric, adolescent, adult, geriatric).
    5. Ability to assess patient status and interpret data to provide appropriate care.
    6. Must have at least 2 years of recent experience in the specialty within the past 2 years.
    Preferred Qualifications (if any)
    1. Prior experience in operating room or labor and delivery settings.
    2. Strong organizational and problem-solving skills.
    3. Ability to work independently and as part of a surgical team.

    Certifications (if any)
    1. Current Basic Life Support (BLS) certification issued by the American Heart Association – required upon hire.
