Job Summary:
The Phlebotomist is responsible for expertly performing blood draws and specimen preparation, ensuring minimal discomfort for patients across diverse demographics. This role is crucial to maintaining high standards of patient care and ensuring accurate specimen handling for diagnostic purposes.
Key Responsibilities:
- Blood Draws & Specimen Preparation: Perform blood draws, label specimens, centrifuge, and decontaminate specimens. Maintain accurate patient records and update information as needed.
- Specimen Collection & Storage: Collect and store specimens in accordance with established procedures to ensure their integrity.
- Patient Communication: Clearly explain the venipuncture (blood draw) or other specimen collection procedures (e.g., urine, fecal) to patients in a compassionate and professional manner.
- Technical Expertise: Demonstrate proficiency in using straight needles and butterfly needles for venipuncture.
- Order Compliance: Fully understand and follow the physicians' orders for specimen collection.
- Specimen Handling: Match laboratory requisition forms to specimen tubes, label, centrifuge, split, and freeze specimens as necessary for test orders.
- Quality Control: Ensure 100% accuracy by verifying test requisitions and labels before processing specimens.
- Specimen Transport: Package specimens for transport and ensure they are stored at the correct temperature in appropriate containers to maintain specimen integrity.
- Regulatory Compliance: Understand and comply with OSHA and DEP regulations, ensuring adherence to safety standards.
- Personal Protective Equipment (PPE): Wear appropriate PPE at all times to protect both patients and staff.
- Training & Development: Attend annual department training sessions to stay up to date on best practices and regulatory requirements.
- Customer Service: Answer phone calls and address laboratory inquiries regarding test results or specimen status.
Additional Duties:
- Perform other duties as assigned by the department or supervisor.
Required Qualifications:
- Proven experience in phlebotomy or specimen collection.
- Strong knowledge of laboratory procedures and specimen handling protocols.
- Excellent communication skills to explain procedures to patients in a clear and compassionate manner.
- Ability to adhere to safety protocols and maintain a sterile work environment.
- Ability to work independently and manage multiple tasks efficiently.
- Must have at least 2 years of recent experience in the specialty within the past 2 years.
Preferred Qualifications:
- Certification in phlebotomy (e.g., ASCP, NHA) preferred.
- Experience working in a clinical or laboratory environment is a plus.
Certifications:
- Phlebotomy certification (e.g., ASCP, NHA) is preferred but not required.
