Job Summary
The Certified Central Sterile Technician is responsible for assembling, sterilizing, and maintaining surgical instruments and supplies to ensure patient safety and support surgical operations. This role plays a critical part in infection control by following strict sterilization procedures and maintaining accurate inventory of sterile equipment.
Key Responsibilities
- Assemble and wrap instrument sets for surgical procedures.
- Ensure proper use of sterilized sonic cleaners and related equipment.
- Retrieve and deliver surgical instruments in a timely manner.
- Inspect instruments thoroughly to ensure cleanliness and proper working order prior to sterilization.
- Decontaminate instruments using appropriate chemical mixtures and procedures.
- Test, operate, and load autoclaves for sterilization.
- Participate in routine cleaning and decontamination of department work surfaces.
- Complete sterilization log sheets accurately.
- Monitor sterile inventory and remove expired or compromised items.
- Re-sterilize compromised instrument sets as needed.
- Identify and report inventory or supply shortages to appropriate personnel.
- Assist in training new staff members when required.
- Prepare and maintain accurate case carts.
- Pull supplies and instruments for surgical cases.
- Coordinate with operating room staff to ensure proper supplies are delivered.
- Maintain optimal levels of patient care surgical supplies and equipment.
- Practice effective inventory control techniques, including FIFO (first in, first out).
Required Qualifications
Technician certification from either:
- Certification Board for Sterile Processing and Distribution (CBSPD), or
- Healthcare Sterile Processing Association (HSPA) as a Certified Registered Central Service Technician (CRCST).
- Must have at least 2 years of recent experience in the specialty within the past 2 years.

- Prior experience in sterile processing or surgical support roles.
- Familiarity with hospital inventory management systems.
