Job Summary
The Registered Nurse in the Electrophysiology (EP) Lab provides specialized nursing care for patients undergoing diagnostic and therapeutic procedures related to cardiac electrophysiology. This role involves assisting physicians during invasive cardiac procedures, monitoring patient status, administering medications, and ensuring a safe and comfortable environment. The RN in the EP Lab collaborates with the healthcare team to deliver high-quality care before, during, and after procedures.
Key Responsibilities
- Prepare patients for electrophysiology procedures by conducting pre-procedure assessments and educating patients about the process.
- Assist physicians and technologists during cardiac electrophysiology diagnostic and therapeutic procedures, including ablations, device implantations, and pacing.
- Monitor patient vital signs and cardiac rhythms continuously during procedures.
- Administer medications, including sedation and emergency drugs, as ordered and within scope of practice.
- Maintain sterile field and ensure adherence to infection control protocols.
- Provide post-procedure care, including monitoring recovery, managing complications, and educating patients and families on discharge instructions.
- Document all nursing care, patient responses, and procedural details accurately in the medical record.
- Respond promptly to emergency situations and activate appropriate protocols.
- Participate in quality improvement initiatives, staff education, and team meetings.
Required Qualifications
- Current and active Registered Nurse (RN) license in the state of practice.
- Graduation from an accredited nursing program (Associate’s or Bachelor’s degree in Nursing).
- Minimum of 1-2 years of nursing experience, preferably in cardiology, critical care, or procedural areas.
- Basic Life Support (BLS) and Advanced Cardiovascular Life Support (ACLS) certifications.
- Strong knowledge of cardiac anatomy, electrophysiology, and monitoring equipment.
- Excellent communication and critical thinking skills.
Preferred Qualifications
- Experience working in an Electrophysiology Lab or Cardiac Catheterization Lab.
- Certification in Cardiac Electrophysiology Nursing (RCES) or similar specialty certification.
- Proficiency with electronic health records (EHR) and procedure documentation systems.
- Ability to work effectively in a fast-paced, high-acuity environment.
Certifications
- Registered Nurse (RN) license (required).
- Basic Life Support (BLS) (required).
- Advanced Cardiovascular Life Support (ACLS) (required).
- Registered Cardiac Electrophysiology Specialist (RCES) certification (preferred).
