Job Summary:
The Cytotechnologist is responsible for the microscopic examination of cell samples to detect abnormalities and assist in the diagnosis of diseases such as cancer. Working in a clinical laboratory setting, the Cytotechnologist plays a vital role in patient care by identifying precancerous, malignant, and infectious conditions through the evaluation of cytological specimens.
Key Responsibilities:
- Prepare and examine slides of cell samples from body sites (e.g., Pap smears, body fluids, fine needle aspirations).
- Use microscopes to analyze cellular patterns and morphology for signs of disease.
- Accurately record and report cytological findings in accordance with laboratory protocols.
- Collaborate with pathologists to review abnormal or suspicious cases.
- Maintain accurate and organized documentation and records.
- Ensure all lab equipment is used properly and maintained according to protocols.
- Follow strict quality control and quality assurance standards.
- Comply with all laboratory safety procedures and regulatory guidelines (e.g., CLIA, CAP, OSHA).
Required Qualifications:
- Bachelor’s degree in Cytotechnology, Biology, or a related field.
- Completion of an accredited Cytotechnology program.
- Certification as a Cytotechnologist (e.g., ASCP certification).
- Proficiency in microscopic examination and familiarity with laboratory equipment.
- Excellent attention to detail and strong analytical skills.
- Effective written and verbal communication skills.
Preferred Qualifications:
- Experience working in a hospital or diagnostic laboratory.
- Familiarity with digital pathology or automated cytology screening systems.
- Advanced certification in molecular cytology or related specialties.
Certifications:
- Certified Cytotechnologist (CT) by the American Society for Clinical Pathology (ASCP) or equivalent.
- Compliance with state licensure requirements, if applicable.
